The similarity in adsorption strength between the adventitiously adsorbed hydrocarbons and sulfide adlayers attests to the sulfides relatively poor ability to bind at gold.

    • 3/2)). This result reflects the presence of two sulfur species where one corresponds to the sulfide and the other to the thiolate. This detected thiolate is due to the presence of traces of thiols or disulfides at a level of ∼0.0059% in these two sulfides. To support this assessment, an extraction experiment was performed to compare the relative composition change before and after extracting the trace impurity by successive gold film substrates. By comparison of the relative XPS intensities of these two sulfur components between adlayers before and after the extraction, a decrease for the lower-BE component was observed after the extraction.
