This study was of ambitious design, and helped a little towards understanding the complex relationship between anxiety predisposition and relaxant effects (or not) of ethanol.
8. 8 Conrod PJ, Petersen JB, Pihl R. Disinhibited personality and sensitivity to alcohol reinforcement: independent correlates of drinking behaviour in sons of alcoholics. Alcohol Clin Exp Res 1997; 21:1320-1332. A complex design was employed, with numerous variables, and somewhat opaque results, some of which did not corroborate previous findings. The authors propose that males with multigenerational family history are over-represented in two subgroups of alcoholics: one characterized by enhanced sensitivity to alcohol reinforcement and the other characterized by high disinhibition (and probably high positive reward from alcohol) and alcohol-related problems.
9. 9 Greenfield SF, Weiss RD, Muenz LR, Vagge LM, Kelly JF, Bello LR, Michael J. The effect of depression on return to drinking-a prospective study. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1998; 556:259-265. In the year after hospital treatment for alcohol dependence, a diagnosis of current major depression at the time of hospitalization was associated with shorter time to first drink. There was no significant difference between women and men in this effect. Depressive symptoms recorded at monthly follow-up interviews on the Beck depression Inventory did not predict time to first drink or relapse in women or men.

The life-time rates of three major mood disorders and four major anxiety disorders in alcoholics and controls. Addiction 1997; 92:1289-1304. Alcohol dependent patients and their relatives who had had the same disorder did not have a higher lifetime rate of independent mood disorder than did control individuals, but had a slightly higher rate of independent panic disorder and social phobia.
11. 11 Moscato BS, Russell M, Zielezny M, Bromet E, Egri G, Mudar P, Marshall JR. Gender differences in the relation between depressive symptoms and alcohol problems: a longitudinal perspective. Am J Epidemiol 1998; 146:966-974. A general population sample was interviewed in 1986, 1989 and 1993. For females, depressive symptoms predicted subsequent alcohol problems over 3 years and 4 years, but not over 7 years. This relationship was not seen for men.

Genetic and environmental contributions to the correlation between alcohol consumption and symptoms of anxiety and depression: results from a bivariate analysis of Norwegian twin data. Behav Genet 1997; 27:241-250. This is a large twin study. Genetic factors accounted completely for the association between depression and alcohol consumption in men, but accounted for only a part of the association in women. Note that the oldest individuals were only 26 years old, and alcohol dependence would not have had time to develop in the majority of at-risk individuals.

Sibpair analysis of alcoholic offenders, their relatives and control individuals was conducted. TPH A779C allele is a marker for suicidality and is associated with alcoholism.

19. 19 Cornelius JR, Salloun IM, Ehler JG, et al. Fluoxetine reduced depressive symptoms and alcohol consumption in patients with comorbid major depression and alcohol dependence. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1997; 54:700-705. Patients admitted for treatment for alcohol dependence who were severely depressed recovered more from their depression, drank less and had more abstinent days if they took fluoxetine in a 3-month study [although rates of attaining complete abstinence were not significantly different (fluoxetine 28%, placebo 15%)].

21. 21 Angelone SM, Bellini L, Disability Bella D, Catalano M. Effects of fluvoxamine and citalopram in maintaining abstinence in a sample of Italian detoxified alcoholics. Alcohol Alcoholism 1998; 33:151-156. Over 16 weeks, both of these selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors improved relapse rates.

24. 24 Brown RA, Evans DM, Miller IW, Burgess ES, Mueller TI. Cognitive-behavioural treatment for depression in alcoholism. J Cons Clin Psychol 1997; 5:715-726. This is a randomized controlled study of eight sessions of either relaxation therapy or CBT for depression in mild to moderately depressed alcohol-dependent patients also receiving outpatient and partial hospital treatment for alcoholism. The CBT group used Alcoholics Anonymous more and had better outcome in the 3 months after treatment finished. A good summary of CBT techniques is given. It is not clear whether the follow up was 'blind'.
25. 25 Patten CA, Martin JE, Myers MG, Calfas KJ. Effectiveness of cognitive-behavioural therapy for smokers with histories of alcohol dependence and depression. J Stud Alcohol 1998; 59:327-335. There is growing interest in how to help alcoholic individuals also cease smoking, because many abstinent alcoholic individuals die early of smoking-related illnesses.
26. 26 Slutske WS, Heath AC, Dinwiddie SH, Madden PA, Bucholz KK, Dunne MP, et al. Common genetic risk factors for conduct disorder and alcohol dependence. J Abnorm Psychol 1998; 107:363-374. In this large twin study, genetic factors were found to account for most of the association between these diagnoses.

28. 28 Lappalainen J, Long JC, Eggert M, Ozaki N, Robin RW, Brown GL, et al. Linkage of antisocial alcoholism to the serotonin 5-HT1B receptor gene in 2 populations. Arch Gen Psychiatry 1998; 55:989-994. This study achieved important replication and extension of earlier findings.
