Encephalitozoon hellem in two Eclectus parrots (Eclectus roratus): Identification from archival tissues
-
43 Pulparampil N, Graham D, Phalen D, Snowden K. Encephalitozoon hellem in two Eclectus parrots (Eclectus roratus): identification from archival tissues. J Euk Microbiol 1998; 45:651-655. This is the second report of E. hellem being found in animals. As with the report of Black et al. [42], this study also found E. hellem in birds that are often kept as caged pets. Perhaps significantly, infection was identified in the kidney and intestine, the voided contents of which may transmit infection to humans.

Brachiola vesicularum n. g., n. sp., A new microsporidian associated with AIDS and myositis
-
45 Cali A, Takvorian PM, Lewin S, Rendel M, Sian CS, Wittner M, et al. Brachiola vesicularum n. g., n. sp., a new microsporidian associated with AIDS and myositis. J Euk Microbiol 1998; 45:240-251. This study describes a new species of microsporidian, Brachiola vesicularum found in an AIDS patient with symptoms of myositis. The morphological detail described in this work has necessitated that the parasite be placed in a new genus, Brachiola. A previously identified species Nosema connori has also been renamed B. connori.

-

(Protozoa: Microsporidia). J Euk Microbiol 1998; 45:273-283. This study describes yet another new microsporidian species found in humans, Trachipleistophora anthropophthera. It was identified in several organs in two patients with AIDS. This new parasite was found to be similar to, but distinct from T. hominis that has been described from human skeletal muscle.
