Q J Med 1998, 91:561-566. Renal vascular lesions were associated with EC activation in vivo, which was reflected by elevated serum levels of endothelial adhesion molecules. whereas pulmonary vascular lesions did not exhibit the phenotype of EC activation. This suggests that these vascular lesions arise by distinct pathogenic mechanisms.

The results of this study suggest that MCP-1, MIP-1α, and MIP-1β are involved in the disease process, possibly by recruiting specific leukocyte subsets into the affected tissues in SSc, such as the skin and lungs.

Clin Exp Immunol 1998, 114:293-300. This study demonstrates that MCP-1 is responsible for SSc fibroblast-induced promotion of leukocyte migration across the EC. Promotion of leukocyte migration does not appear to result from increased endothelial adhesion molecules, such as ICAM-1, VCAM-1, and E-selectin, Although MCP-1 may be mainly of fibroblast origin, the source of MCP-1 cannot be directly determined in this study.
