(a) Strickly speaking, polycatenanes have topological bonds whereas polyrotaxanes do not; the difference is that in the former a covalent bond has to be broken within one of the macrocycles of a catenane unit to disassemble the structure, whereas in the latter, the stretching of a covalent bonds can be sufficient.
