The formation of closed vs. open lamellar structures may reflect the relative importance of the curvature energy and the rim-capping energy; because one of the structures involves an energy penalty resulting from the formation of the hemicylindrical cap around the rim of the lamella, while the other involves a curvature energy penalty when a sheetlike lamella is wrapped and becomes a closed vesicle. Therefore, the formation of the closed vesicles may suggest that the rim-capping energy is more important than the curvature energy for the aggregates with a size in a certain range. It has also been shown in a recent study of the formation of mesosized aggregates (e.g., several hundreds of nanometers), that the end-capping energy of rod-like micelles is also more important than the curvature energy, which leads to the formation of hoops.
