Examples of topological defects in a lattice are dislocations and disclinations. A dislocation may be viewed as a disclination pair. See P. M. Chaikin and T. C. Lubensky, Principles of Condensed Matter Physics (Cambridge Univ. Press, Cambridge, 1995).

All of the data presented here are highly reproducible provided the sample was prepumped in a vacuum oven for several hours to remove excess moisture before the free-standing films were made.

However, this plausible reasoning cannot explain another experimental result. A divergent heat-capacity anomaly was found in two-layer films of another LC compound near the Sm-A-Hex-B transition (17). Within our resolution of 2 mK, no thermal hysteresis can be detected [T. Stoebe and C. C. Huang, Phys. Rev. E 49, 5238 (1994)].
