    • In a rigorous analysis, the influence of spin-state changes on bond distances must be considered, since this would influence antibonding orbital population. However, an analysis which takes spin state into account would be complicated by the fact that 2 is mixed spin (S = 1/2/S = 3/2). A detailed molecular orbital decription along with temperature-dependent magnetic studies is therefore needed before a discussion of this type is attempted.
