The capacity factor (k′) is used as a retention parameter; k′ = [V(t) - V(0)]/V(0), where V(t) is the retention volume and V(0) is the dead volume or the retention volume of a nonbinding substrate. This parameter is superior to retention time because it is independent of column size or amount of stationary phase in the column.
