The reaction of ethylbenzene (250 mL) with di-tert-butyl peroxide (6.0 g) in the presence of TEMPO (3.0 g) was done at 140°C for 4.5 h. 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-1-(1-phenylethoxy)piperidine was obtained after evaporation of ethylbenzene and was purified by recrystallization from ethanol. Yield: 3.1 g (62% based on TEMPO).
