    • Clark SE, Williams RW, Meyerowitz EM: The CLAVATA1 gene encodes a putative receptor kinase that controls shoot and floral meristem size in Arabidopsis. Cell 1997, 89:575-585. CLV1 is necessary for maintaining the proper balance between differentiated and undifferentiated cells in apical and floral meristems. The finding that CLV1 encodes an RLK established a critical role for RLKs in cell-cell communication during development. This is an important insight for understanding the molecular basis of development and provides a biological context for further investigation of RLK signaling mechanisms and components.

    • Li J, Chory J: A putative leucine-rich repeat receptor kinase involved in brassinosteroid signal transduction. Cell 1997, 90:929-938. Brassinolide is a steroid hormone which classically bind to soluble ligand-activated transcription factors. The cloning of BRI1, however, revealed it to be an RLK, which raises new questions about steroid signaling mechanisms and establishes a new paradigm for hormonal responses in plants.
