Both T and B cells shed infectious mouse mammary tumor virus
-
of special interest. Data is presented that both B and T cells are infected by MMTV and that both cell types produce infectious virions. Interestingly, the level of T cell infection varies between mouse strains, which correlates with tumor development in those mice. Thus, both B and T cells are potential carriers of MMTV to the mammary gland, the site of transmission of the virus.

of outstanding interest Golovkina TV, Dudley JP, Ross SR. Superantigen activity is needed for mouse mammary tumor virus spread within the mammary gland. J Immunol. 1998; Using a MMTV strain having a frameshift in the superantigen gene, the authors show that superantigen, as well as both B and T cells, is required for infection of the mammary gland and, thus, it is essential for transmission of MMTV in milk.
