    • The chemical synthesis of these high-pedigree monodisperse oligoamides by Dr. G. Brooke and his colleagues at the Chemistry Department, University of Durham, was in response to a desire by Prof. E. Atkins and his colleagues at the Physics Department, University of Bristol, for high-fidelity oligo- and polyamides that are necessary for studying fundamental aspects of polymer physics: in this case, the suble interplay between van der Waals interactions, hydrogen bonding, chain-folding, and crystallization. We appreciate the foresight of the Engineering and Science Research Council, U.K., in supporting this collaborative venture.

    • In the 9-amide nylon 6 γ-phase crystals, the interchain distances are between 0.465 and 0.492 nm; these values are typical of those expected for amide interchain hydrogen-bonded distances. The relative population of each of the trigonal hydrogen bond directions in the γ-phase will then depend on the relative strengths of the hydrogen bonds formed in each direction.
