Plant Cell 1997, 9:1251-1264. The first comprehensive study of the possible correlations between transgene expression and the chromosomal location, various genome features (matrix attachment regions [MARs], repeat types), and inserted structure of that transgene. Centromeric location and adjacent binary vector sequences were associated with unstable transgene expression, while telomeric location and nearby MARs were associated with stable expression. A model for future studies.

Science 1996, 274:765-768. This paper describes an unexpectedly simple organizational pattern and composition of the repetitive DNA blocks found between genes in maize. Fairly intact long terminal repeat (LTR)-retrotransposons are inserted within each other, exhibiting a preference for accumulation in these methylated, heterochromatic regions. The LTR-retrotransposons discovered are present in copy numbers ranging from a few to a few tens of thousands, and overall comprise over half of the maize genome.
