Voltage gating of Escherichia coli porin channels: Role of the constriction loop
-
Phale PS, Schirmer T, Prilipov A, Lou K-L, Hardmeyer A, Rosenbusch JP: Voltage gating of Escherichia coli porin channels: role of the constriction loop. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1997, 94:6741-6745. Analysis of site-directed mutants in OmpF residues that were previously implicated in voltage gating, based on electrostatic interactions involving the transverse loop and the ß barrel. The results show that alterations in permeability do not involve physical displacement of the L3 loop, as previously theorized. It is regrettable, however, that assays of natural solute permeability were not performed.

Rate constants of sugar transport through two LamB mutants of Escherichia coli: Comparison with wild-type maltoporin and LamB of Salmonella typhimurium

J Mol Biol 1996, 259:666-678. This work constitutes the most careful and rigorous existing study of maltose and maltodextrin binding at a site inside wild-type and mutant maltoporins. The authors profit from an experimental obstacle, increased noise of current measurements that occurs when sugars occupy the pore, to determine the thermodynamic and kinetic constants that describe the binding of sugars within the maltoporin channel.
