Mechanisms of adhesion by oral bacteria
-
Whittaker CJ, Klier CM, Kolenbrander PE: Mechanisms of adhesion by oral bacteria. Annu Rev Microbiol 1996, 50:513-552. An up-to-date and comprehensive overview of mechanisms of adhesion of oral bacteria. The review includes an excellent description of the intriguing, highly interactive and specific events which lead to the formation of dental plaque, a very complex human biofilm.

Weinberg A, Belton CM, Park Y, Lamont RJ: Role of Porphyromonas gingivalis fimbriae in invasion of gingival epithelial cells. Infect Immun 1997, 65:313-316. The authors showed that purified major fimbriae blocked P. gingivalis invasion into gingival epithelial cells in a dose-dependent manner and that invasion by a P. gingivalis fimbrial-deficient mutant was impaired, demonstrating a role for P. gingivalis major fimbriae in invasion of epithelial cells.

Invasion of epithelial cells by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans: A dynamic, multistep process
-
Meyer DH, Lippmann JL, Fives-Taylor PM: Invasion of epithelial cells by Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans: a dynamic, multistep process. Infect Immun 1996, 64:2988-2997. This paper describes in detail the complex, multistep invasion process of the Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. It reveals that bacteria that cause chronic infections, such as periodontitis, and bacteria that cause acute infections, such as dysentery, have developed similar invasion strategies.

Effects of oral flora on platelets: Possible consequences in cardiovascular disease
-
Herzberg MC, Meyer MW: Effects of oral flora on platelets: possible consequences in cardiovascular disease. J Periodontol 1996, 67:1138-1142. The study indicates that infusion of rabbits with Streptococcus sanguis results in changes in electrocardiograms, heart rate, cardiac contractility and blood pressure consistent with a myocardial infarction occurrence, demonstrating further a link between oral infections and coronary heart disease.

Immunization with FimA protects against Streptococcus parasanguis endocarditis in rats
-
Viscount HB, Munro CL, Burnette-Curley D, Peterson DL, Macrina FL: Immunization with FimA protects against Streptococcus parasanguis endocarditis in rats. Infect Immun 1997, 64:994-1002. FimA is a surface-associated protein of Streptococcus parasanguis which is associated with initial colonization of damaged heart tissue in rat endocarditis. In this study it was shown that anti-FimA immune serum decreases adherence of S. parasanguis to platelet-matrix in vitro. Furthermore, FimA immunization protected rats from developing S. parasanguis endocarditis providing evidence that FimA is an important virulence determinant of S. parasanguis endocarditis.
