Pituitary follistatin regulates activin mediated production of follicle-stimulating hormone during the rat estrous cycle

Endocrinology 1997, 138:2841-2848. This paper measures pituitary follistatin through the rat estrous cycle, and describes studies to assess the role of pituitary activin by in vivo infusion of follistatin and removal of accumulated activin by perfusion of dispersed pituitary cells. A model to reconcile the roles of GnRH pulses, gonadal inhibin, and pituitary follistatin and free activin in FSH surges in the estrous cycle is presented.

Pituitary follistatin and inhibin subunit messenger ribonucleic acid levels are differentially regulated by local and hormonal factors
-
Bilezikjian LM, Corrigan AZ, Biout AL, Vale WW: Pituitary follistatin and • inhibin subunit messenger ribonucleic acid levels are differentially regulated by local and hormonal factors. Endocrinology 1996, 137:4277-4284. This paper describes modulation of the mRNAs for follistatin, and the inhibin/activin α and βB subunits by inhibin A, activin A and B, follistatin, and GnRH in dispersed rat pituitary cells. In general, follistatin and inhibin βB subunit are regulated in parallel, whereas the inhibin α-subunit mRNA levels remain relatively stable.
