In this study, the role of the L-arginine-induced stimulation of insulin release on the leg dilatory action of L-arginine was tested through the prevention of insulin release by the somatostatin analogue octreotide. In this condition, the vascular response of L-arginine was blunted, thus suggesting that endogenous insulin partly mediates the effect of L-arginine.

In this study, it is shown that the whole-body production of NO is deficient in basal conditions in patients with essential hypertension. An inverse correlation between total urinary excretion of nitrate, measured by mass spectrometry and mean daytime ambulatory arterial pressure, was obtained.
