Human cytotrophoblasts adopt a vascular phenotype as they differentiate. A strategy for successful endovascular invasion?
-
Zhou Y, Fisher SJ, Janatpour M, Genbacev O, Dejana E, Wheelock M, •• Damsky CH. Human cytotrophoblasts adopt a vascular phenotype as they differentiate. A strategy for successful endovascular invasion? J Clin Invest 1997; 99:2139-2151. This group of researchers continue to lead the field in improving our understanding of the processes leading to normal and abnormal placentation. Here they report that invading trophoblasts 'switch' phenotypically from epithelial to endothelial. They thus mimic the endothelial cells they ultimately displace in the spiral arterioles.

-
Levine RJ, Hauth JC, Curet LB, Sibai BM, Catalano PM, Morris CD, et al. •• Trial of calcium to prevent preeclampsia. N Engl J Med 1997; 337:69-76. An important paper which reports a large prospective randomized study performed in the USA and which shows no significant benefit of calcium supplementation in the prevention of pre-eclampsia.
