This manuscript suggests that the relevancy of some prognostic factors may be dependent on interaction with other factors. The authors provide insights into a large group of early-stage melanoma patients and suggest that some factors that do not provide prognostic value for large groups may have significant power for subsets of patients when evaluated in the context of other coexisting factors.

7. Barnhill RL, Fine JA, Roush GC, Berwisk M: Predicting five-year outcome for patients with cutaneous melanoma in a population-based study. Cancer 1996, 78:427-432. The authors provide a regression analysis evaluating prognostic factors in early-stage melanoma patients from a population-based study in Connecticut. This is a recent evaluation that provides additional information that tumor thickness is the most critical prognostic factor.
8. Huang X, Soong S, McCarthy WH, Urist MM, Balch CM: Classification of localized melanoma by the exponential survival trees method. Cancer 1997, 79:1122-1128. This is a novel approach at providing a survival model for patients with localized melanoma. They use an exponential survival tree approach as opposed to regression analysis that provides an opportunity to incorporate interactions between multiple prognostic factors. The authors offer homogenous prognostic groups based on these analyses.

This report provides a regression analysis evaluating the relative importance of specific histopathologic markers such as tumor infiltrating lymphocytes, vertical growth phase, and mitotic rate.
12. Halpern AC, Schuchter LM: Prognostic models in melanoma. Semin Oncol 1997, 24:S4-2-S4-7. An interesting modeling approach for patients with early-stage melanoma is described. The authors provide two regression analysis models that combine both clinical and histopathologic factors through which survival rates can be accurately predicted.

The authors describe two small subsets of melanoma patients within an enormous database from the Sydney Melanoma Unit who developed recurrences despite a predicted favorable outcome upon initial diagnoses. The authors provide specific characteristics about the primary tumor that may be responsible for these recurrences.

Data supporting the continued classification of these patients as having stage III disease is presented.

The role of PET scanning in the detection of melanoma metastases is discussed in this manuscript following the authors institutional experience with the first 100 melanoma patients scanned. The authors suggest that this imaging study may be very sensitive and specific compared to other imaging modalities.
