Bronchoalveolar lavage was performed on patients with systemic sclerosis with and without alveolitis and on normal control subjects. Significant differences were found between groups in the BAL fluid of tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-8, macrophage inflammatory protein 1α, and RANTES (regulated upon activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted).

J Rheumatol 1997, 24:663-665. Serum tumor necrosis factor α levels were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in patients with limited SSc and diffuse SSc and in control subjects. Elevated levels were found in patients with limited SSc and diffuse SSc and correlated wtih the presence of pulmonary fibrosis and with the decreased vital capacity of the patients.

J Rheumatol 1997, 24:81-85. Twenty-eight patients with diffuse and 24 patients with limited SSc underwent pulmonary function studies, high-resolution CT of the lungs, and Doppler echocardiography. Extent and severity of cutaneous and pulmonary involvement were not correlated, although restrictive lung disease was more frequent in patients with diffuse form, whereas a trend to higher prevalence of pulmonary hypertension was observed in patients with limited cutaneous involvement.

    • Wells AU, Hansell DM, Rubens MB, King AD, Cramer D, Black CM, Du Bois RM: Fibrosing alveolitis in systemic sclerosis. Arthritis Rheum 1997, 40:1229-1236. Sixty-four patients with fibrosing alveolitis associated with systemic sclerosis were studied using thin-section CT and static and exercise lung function testing. The percent predicted Dlco correlated better with extent of disease on CT than did oxygen desaturation on exercise or other measurements of pulmonary function.
