This multicentre study shows that the BIS index may be used for the prediction of movement to skin incision during general anaesthesia. Transcranial high-frequency stimulation in combination with total intravenous anaesthesia is shown to provide a feasible setting for intraoperative recording of MEPs. In contrast, higher doses of nitrous oxide and isoflurane may abolish MEPs.

    • Multimodal monitoring in patients with head injury: Evaluation of the effects of treatment on cerebral oxygenation
    • 2), jugular bulb oxygenation, arterial blood pressure, intracranial pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure were prospectively studied. This study shows that therapeutic interventions may be selectively chosen on the basis of the multimodal monitoring concept. A cerebral perfusion pressure greater than 60 mmHg emerges as the crucial factor for adequate brain oxygenation. Any intervention used to elevate cerebral perfusion pressure further or decrease intracranial pressure (e.g. hyperventilation) does not improve cerebral oxygenation.
