The authors distinguish between different levels of theory construction and the importance of separating distal from proximal causal factors. They suggest that a more collaborative approach would advance our understanding of sexual offending by reducing the fragmentation of current theory construction.
5. Ward T, Hudson SM, Johnson L, Marshall WL. Cognitive distortions in sex offenders: an integrative review. Clin Psychol Rev 1997; 17:479-507. The authors apply a social cognition framework to integrate the literature on cognition in sex offending.
6. Haapasalo J, Kankkonen MA. Self-reported childhood abuse among sex and violent offenders. Arch Sexual Behav 1997; 26:421-431. This small pilot study examined the continuity between a history of childhood sexual abuse and subsequent sexual offending in adulthood. The sexual offenders, as compared with other violent offenders, appeared to come from more abusive childhood family environments.
7. Johnson BR, Becker JV. Natural born killers? The development of the sexually sadistic serial killer. J Am Acad Psychiatry Law 1997; 25:335-348. Can we identify at an early age those who go on subsequently to become serial sexual killers? This article compares nine adolescents who had significant sexual fantasies of becoming a serial sexual killer with retrospective reports of sexual killers.

This is an important, large (n = 23 393) meta-analysis examining the rate of recidivism among sex offenders and factors associated with further sex reoffending.

This study compared the adult pattern of offending in a group convicted of juvenile sex offenders with another group convicted of juvenile violent offences. The group with a juvenile sexual offence history had the higher rate of sexual recidivism, although convictions for sexual offending was uncommon in both groups.

This review stresses that rapists ought to be distinguished from child molesters, because they have more in common with other nonsexual violent criminals. The authors conclude that rapists' low rate of engagement and completion of treatment programmes could be improved if there were specific programmes tailored to their needs.
20. Weinrott MR, Riggan M, Frothingham S. Reducing deviant arousal in juvenile sex offenders using vicarious sensrtization. J Interpers Viol 1997; 12:704-728. This randomized wait-list controlled study investigated the effects of aversive conditioning on teenage child molesters. There was a significant decrease in the deviant arousal in those who were treated and these effects were maintained at 3-month follow-up.
21. Rosier A, Witztum E. Treatment of men with paraphilia with a long-acting analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone. N Engl J Med 338:416-422. This was an open-labelled uncontrolled trial of triptorelin, a long-acting agonist of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone that reduces testosterone secretion, in 30 paraphilic men. Deviant sexual desires and fantasies decreased with treatment, as did abnormal sexual behaviour.

24. Knutson B, Wolkowitz OM, Cole SW, Chan T, Moore EA, Johnson RC, Selective alteration of personality and social behavior by serotonergic intervention. Am J Psychiatry 1998; 155:373-379. This double-blind, placebo-controlled study examined the effects of paroxetine on personality and social behaviour in normal volunteers. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor reduced hostility and increased social affiliation, and these effects were independent of baseline clinical depression.
