of special interest. Two transplanted tumors (Lewis lung carcinoma and B16 melanoma) both show significantly less metastasis to the lungs in matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-2-deficient mice. As the cancer cells themselves have a fully functional MMP-2 gene, this result points to an important role for host cells as suppliers of MMP-2 activity.
