2. Fulford KWM. The value structure of psychopathology: philosophy, clinical practice and neuroscience research. Ital J Psychiatr Behav Sci 1997; 7:55-62. This paper is part of a special forum that the Italian Journal of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science, which is the official journal of the Italian Psychiatric Association, has devoted to ethics and neuroscience. Fulford convincingly argues that current neuroscience needs a different philosophical and ethical understanding.

Analysing in depth the structure of the psychiatric profession, Bloch argues that it was not by chance.

This paper gives an interesting historical account of brain morphological research. The author, who is clearly aligned with biological psychiatry, shows that some ethical concerns raised by psychiatric research are groundless.

The decade of the brain and the Human Genome Project are the two great scientific ventures of the end of the millennium. This paper suggests that a similar philosophy underlies these two enterprises and warns against the possible misuse of biological information.

The authors address the question of whether human brain tissue possesses a particular ethical and social status. They conclude with a set of recommendations: whole brain or whole head transplantation should be prohibited; complete hemisphere transplants should be prohibited; research on small cells population should continue; research on large tissue mass should be approved by an ethical review board; growing substantial masses of brain tissue in laboratories should be allowed under the supervision of an ethical review board; growing or maintaining complete brains without bodies should be prohibited.

Starting from Ritalin, the authors address the crucial question of whether there is any basic ethical, social, or legal objection to commercializing drugs that may enhance cognitive functions. They conclude that, even if there is no substantial reason to oppose this, an attentive usage of these medications should be advocated.
