Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers; 1997 pp. 34-39. Husserl's transcendental phenomenology provided just the sort of formalization of the subject's common sense understanding of the everyday world that cognitivist Al researchers have been searching for. However, it is instructive that such an infinite task (the hope of ever explicitly, propositionally formalizing everyday common sense) falters when confronting the complexity of background familiarity and skillful coping. Here, Heidegger's analysis of the embeddedness of subjects in equipmental contexts is helpful. To demonstrate his point, Dreyfus used everyday coping in the expert's acquisition of skill, a transition in which deliberate, serial cognitive processes are gradually replaced by a rapid, holistic, nonreflective grasp of goals and a means of action, which becomes increasingly embodied and automatic. Unlike the beginner, the expert does not employ a detached, explicit following of rules or the explicit representation of a goal but rather an involvement in which plans and strategies are intuitively evoked. The action is solicited by the situation to meet its precise demands but in a way that also relies on the structural supports of the situation. This is not calculation but (as von Weizsäecker would say) improvisation. The explicit, detached following of rules or represented goals actually impairs skillful coping.

    • Clark A. Being there, Putting brain, mind and world back together again. Cambridge: MIT Press, 1997. In this uneven but obviously inspired work, Clark developed many ideas to be found in the work of Dreyfus, Hutchins, Kelso and Thelen, but also Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty. In so doing, the author tried to reconcile existential phenomenology with connectionism and self-organizing, dynamic systems. Clark described dynamic systems as complementary to connectionist approaches rather than replacing them. The classical cognitive (Al) and connectionist approaches to disembodied input-output mapping, however, are decidedly inadequate in approaching the complexity and opportunistic character of biological cognition. Faced with pressing time constraints on real world action (which often decide survival for the organism), a restrictive pattern completing style of on board computation, the biological brain does not operate in terms of the common sense divisions between brain, body and world which our current rationalist prejudices dictate. Embodied, active cognition employs props or scaffolding, including language, culture and written records. In this emphasis on external cultural structures and a subjectivity which adjusts to them, Clark unwittingly echoes some of the themes of the philosophical or phenomenological anthropologists earlier in the century.

    • The naturalization of phenomenology as the transcendence of nature, searching for generative mutual constraints
    • Varela FJ. The naturalization of phenomenology as the transcendence of nature, searching for generative mutual constraints. Alter Revue de Phenomenologie 1997; 5:355-381. In Varela's enactive, embodied approach, cognition is seen as the emergent activity of situated agents in interdependent relationship with their environment. The author has focused on the convergence of Husserl's analysis of time consciousness of the just past as retention and the neurodynamics of slippage as bifurcation. Synchronization is dynamically unstable and thus gives rise to new, successive cell assemblies.

Edited by Petitot J, Varela FJ, Pachoud B. Stanford: Stanford University Press; 1998 (in press). The author proposed that we apply phenomenological reduction to suspend the habitual attitudes and notions of time that uncritically inform cognitive and computation models of time perception (e.g. hypothetical internal clocks that count pulses, the Turing machine in its linear inscribing of symbols in indefinitely infinite strings). Husserl discovered that inner time consciousness has a complex texture rather than a linear sequence ad infinitum. The temporal organization of experience is envisioned as a flowing off of nows and their immediate retentions. Varela searched for neurological under-pinnings of subjective time in nonlinear, dynamic systems theory. Helpful appendices at the end of the chapter explain Husserl's phenomenology of time consciousness and the dynamic theory of self-organizing systems.

    • Depraz N. Phenomenological reduction as a practice. Journal of Consciousness Stud 8, 1998 (in press). Depraz performed an immense service by spelling out how the various kinds of phenomenological reductions are performed and their various functions and effects (e.g. transcendental, eidetic, psychological, etc.). The author emphasized that reduction in its suspension of belief in the world of natural reality nevertheless remains an embodied effective practice, i.e. it anticipates results which will be shared with a scientific community.

    • Edited by Petitot J, Varela FJ, Pachoud B. Stanford: Stanford University Press; (in press)
    • Depraz N. When transcendental genesis encounters the naturalizing project. In Naturalizing Phenomenology: Issues in contemporary phenomenology and cognitive science. Edited by Petitot J, Varela FJ, Pachoud B. Stanford: Stanford University Press; 1998 (in press). The author showed how phenomenological reduction enables a movement from engaged belief in a natural reality to a reflective consideration of how this belief develops as meaningful structure in consciousness and the condition for sharing a social world. Depraz argued that enactive theories of emergence in terms of the self-organizing populations of cell assemblies (immanent emergence) can be coordinated with the genetic phenomenological approach to the coemergence of embodied self and world. Helpful appendices at the end define phenomenology and naturalism.

Disturbances to time consciousness are not always nosologically specific and may occur in a variety of psychiatric and neurological disorders. However, depressive patients report a slowing down of time and certain features of disturbance may be noted: disturbance of time organization is accompanied by a subjective feeling of one's experience of time coming to a stand still, a predominance of past over future, time-durations are over-evaluated the subjective expanded time sense and inaccurate evaluations of duration correlate with severity of illness.

Frankfurt am Main: Suhrkamp Verlag; 1998. Written during the reign of National Socialism, Der Gestaltkreis is von Weizsäecker's admittedly cryptic attempt (despite the ideological restrictions) to retain links with Freud's psychoanalysis and Buber's dialogical thought. This work marks a high point in von Weizsäecker's own thought and the culmination of the author's efforts to demonstrate an inalienable subjectivity in a series of sense-physiological experiments as well as its implications for a concept of illness in psychosomatic medicine. In this classic, which is still neglected, the author develops thoughts which have considerable relevance to contemporary problems in neuroscience and its application to psychopathology. While the editors have devotedly prepared detailed annotated notes, there is no introductory overview to situate von Weizsäecker either in terms of the controversial past or his present significance.
