Fasting triglycerides, high density lipoprotein, and risk of myocardial infarction
-
Gaziano JM, Hennekens CH, O'Donnell JC, Breslow JL, Buring JE. Fasting triglycerides, high density lipoprotein, and risk of myocardial infarction. Circulation 1997; 96:2520-2525. A hospital-based case control study of 340 cases of myocardial infarction and an equal number of controls matched for age, sex and community to examine fasting levels of various lipids. The study found that fasting triglycerides, as a marker of triglyceride-rich lipoproteins, may provide useful information about the thrombogenic potential of the lipoprotein profile, particularly for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Common carotid intima-media thickness and risk of stroke and myocardial infarction
-
Bots ML, Hoes AW, Koudstaal PJ, Hofman A, Grobbee DE. Common carotid intima-media thickness and risk of stroke and myocardial infarction. Circulation 1997; 96:1432-1437. A population-based, prospective, nested, case control study among 7983 ndividuals. This study evaluated the predictiveness of high resolution B-mode ultrasonography of the thickness of the intima-media of the common carotid artery for future stroke and myocardial infarction. Based on short-term follow-up, there was evidence that increased common carotid intima-media thickness was associated with future stroke and myocardial infarction.

-
Hebert PR, Gaziano JM, Hennekens CH. Cholesterol lowering with statin drugs, risk of stroke, and total mortality. An overview of randomised trials. JAMA 1997; 278:313-321. A systematic review of the trials of cholesterol reduction with hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitors examining stroke and total mortality A total of 16 trials were included, with 29 000 individuals treated for an average of 3.3 years with average reductions of total cholesterol of 22% 454 strokes occurred in the follow-up period and those assigned to the statin drugs experienced a significant reduction in future stroke of 29% (95% Cl: 14%-41%).

-
Bucher HC, Griffith LE, Guyatt GH. Effect of HMGcoA reductase inhibitors on stroke. A meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials. Ann Intern Med 1998; 128:89-95. A systematic review of the trials of cholesterol reduction with hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase inhibitors or other lipid lowering interventions, examining stroke and total mortality. A total of 28 trials were included with 106 113 individuals treated for 0.5 years to 10 years with reductions of total cholesterol ranging from 34%. The trials were very heterogeneous and only the statin group of trials produced significant reductions in stroke risk of 0.76 (95% Cl: 0.62-0.42), Trials of fibrates, resins and dietary interventions did not provide evidence of reduction in stroke.
