    • For quantitative and reproducible measurements of the ion-exchange processes, we used the air-dried resins, since the dye concentration might vary if a wet resin were added to the dye solution for soaking. When the air-dried resin was soaked in an aqueous dye solution, the resin particles sank immediately. The results indicate that diffusion of water molecules into the particle is very fast and the interior of the resin is hydrated. On the other hand, the dye molecules are adsorbed only in the surface layer of the resin in the initial stage of soaking, and diffusion of the dye into the interior is very slow compared to that of water: RhB, day to week; MG, ∼hour. In the present experiments, therefore, D determined represents that in a wet or hydrated resin particle.
