Expired nitric oxide as a marker for childhood asthma
-
Nelson BV, Sears S, Woods J, Ling CY, Hunt J, Clapper LM, Gaston B. Expired nitric oxide as a marker for childhood asthma. J Pediatr 1997; 130:423-427. The authors report the first evidence that expired nitric oxide is increased in children with asthma, and provide evidence that these levels decrease with anti-inflammatory treatment. This non-invasive measurement may prove to be a more sensitive measure of childhood asthma than spirometry.

Effect of sevoflurane and halothane on the airways and pulmonary tissues in piglets with methacholine-induced bronchospasm
-
Habre W, Wildhaber J, Sly P. Effect of sevoflurane and halothane on the airways and pulmonary tissues in piglets with methacholine-induced bronchospasm. Anesthesiology 1997; 87:585-590. We demonstrated that sevoflurane is as effective as halothane in preventing changes in respiratory mechanics in response to the intravenous administration of methacholine. Surprisingly, methacholine increased pulmonary resistance by an action on the pulmonary parenchyma, with no significant effect on airway resistance. These findings may support the hypothesis of a major participation of pulmonary parenchyma in asthma.

-
Habre W, Matsumoto I, Sly PD. Propofol or halothane anesthesia for children with asthma: effects on respiratory mechanics. Br J Anaesth 1996; 77:739-743. This study provides information on respiratory mechanics in children with and without asthma receiving routine induction of anesthesia with propofol, followed by maintenance with halothane. The results suggest that propofol could be used safely in well-stabilized asthmatics.
