Szwarc and van Beylen mistakenly related the apparent activation energies for the system given in Fig. 4 to polymer concentration rather than head-group concentration; see p. 164 of ref. 3 and p. 108 of ref. 4. Obviously the former parameter increases until complete conversion is consummated while head-group concentration remains constant during the propagation event. Furthermore the measured activation energies limit the average head-group dissociation ΔH to the level of the hydrogen bond ca. 25 kJ or less. Values of this magnitude are unrealistically low for ionic head-groups. Thus the values of the measured activation energies serve to undermine the mechanism of equations (3) and (4).
