    • This estimate is based on the simple view of a brush layer as a macroscopic rubber slab which can only swell in a direction normal to the grafting interface. Lateral macroscopic scale swelling of a polymer brush layer is inhibited by the grafting of the chain ends which limits the degree of lateral brush layer expansion.
