Estimating non-response bias in mail surveys
-
The last quartile of respondents was assumed to be most similar to nonrespondents since their replies took the longest time and most effort to obtain. The responses given by the last quartile were compared with those provided by the first three quartiles. Comparison of means of the responses given by each group revealed only six significant differences (at p ≤ .05) out of 159 variables analyzed (J. Scott Armstrong and Terry S. Overton, "Estimating Non-Response Bias in Mail Surveys," Journal of Marketing Research, Vol. 14, No. 3, 1977, pp. 396-402).

A paradigm for developing better measures of marketing constructs
-
All scale measures were reliable as Cronbach's alpha values equal to or greater than 0.70 are generally accepted as indicating reliable scales (Gilbert A. Churchill, Jr., "A Paradigm for Developing Better Measures of Marketing Constructs," Journal of Marketing Research, Vol. 16, No. 4, 1979, pp. 64-73).

note
-
The overall JIT score could range from 51 to 255 (i.e., each item ranged from 1 to 5 and 51 individual items comprised the overall JIT score). The actual range for the sample was 62 to 225. Cluster analysis for two groups established a cutoff score of 108. This resulted in 15 respondents classified as JIT firms and 36 firms as non-JIT.

note
-
Firms were placed in the "high" grouping if they had a mean score on the multiple-item scale of 2 or less, consistent with the results of the cluster analysis used to classify firms as JIT or non-JIT. Firms were placed in the "low" grouping if they had mean scores of 3 or greater. This eliminated 7 firms that had mean scores between 2 and 3. The authors adopted this conservative cutoff to ensure that there was a clear distinction between firms in the "high" group and those in the "low" group. For comparison, an analysis was run using firms with mean scores of less than 3 as the "high" group and firms with mean scores of 3 or greater in the "low" group. The results were not substantially different from those reported in the article using the more conservative grouping categories.
