Fas-mediated cytotoxicity. An immunoeffector or immunoregulatory pathway in T cell-mediated immune responses?
-
Larsen CP, Alexandre DZ, Hendrix R, Ritchie SC, Pearson SC: • Fas-mediated cytotoxicity. An immunoeffector or immunoregulatory pathway in T cell-mediated immune responses? Transplantation 1995, 60:221-224. This may be the first description of the presence of Fas and Fas ligand in the transplanted heart. Perhaps more importantly, this study demonstrates that Fas/Fas ligand interactions are not essential mediators of post-transplant graft dysfunction.

Myocardial apoptosis in a murine heterotropic murine heart transplant model of chronic rejection and graft vasculopathy
-
White WL, Zhang L, Shelby J, Trautman MS, Perkins SL, Hammond EH, • et al.: Myocardial apoptosis in a murine heterotropic murine heart transplant model of chronic rejection and graft vasculopathy. J Heart Lung Transplant 1997, 16:250-255. This study demonstrates evidence of Fas ligand and apoptosis in both murine allografts and syngeneic grafts. As both allografts and syngeneic grafts show evidence of apoptosis, but only allografts strongly express the Fas ligand, different mechanisms may account for apoptosis in these two models.

Apoptosis in murine cardiac grafts
-
Bergese SD, Klenotic SM, Wakely ME, Sedmak DD, Oroscz CG: • Apoptosis in murine cardiac grafts. Transplantation 1997, 63:320-325. Whereas these investigators found apoptosis in the transplanted murine heart, apoptosis did not correlate with graft failure or parenchymal cell damage. The authors speculated that the periarterial apoptosis seen in this study may be indicative of immunoregulatory processes or repair processes of the graft.

Apoptosis of mononuclear cell infiltrates in cardiac allograft biopsy specimens questions studies of biopsy-cultured cells
-
Jollow KC, Sunderstrom JB, Gravanis MB, Kanter K, Herskowitz A, • Ansari AA: Apoptosis of mononuclear cell infiltrates in cardiac allograft biopsy specimens questions studies of biopsy-cultured cells. Transplantation 1997, 63:1482-1489. These investigators examined human allograft biopsy specimens and found apoptosis in the Quilty lesions of rejecting hearts, but not in the Quilty lesions of nonrejecting hearts. The authors give a word of caution in the interpretation of data regarding mononuclear cells that are cultured and propagated from biopsy specimens.
