This study demonstrates that medullary serotonergic neurons, whose activity is suppressed during carbachol-induced atonia, may project to both motoneurons and autonomic centers. The authors suggest that such neurons may be important in respiratory control, especially of the upper airway.

Brain Res 1996, 716:123-133. The first study to show that the discharge of serotonergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus is related to rhythmic motor activity. Prior to this study, the activity of these neurons was thought to vary only in association with behavioral state and/or tonic muscle tone.
