Clin Physiol 1997, 17:71-81. In this study of changes in skin temperature and blood flow, the authors conclude that temperature readings are an ambiguous measure of skin blood flow, whereas laser Doppler flow seems more reliable.

Toms SL, Cooke ED: A comparison of the functioning of arterlovenous anastomoses in secondary Raynaud's phenomenon and control subjects in response to local hand warming, Int Angiol 1995, 14:74-79. In patients with SSc, rewarming after cooling of the hand showed an increase in blood flow; in healthy subjects there was a drop in circulatory volume. This is explained by the opening of arteriovenous shunts, which steal the blood from capillaries. In Ssc, the failure of arteriovenous shunt opening (sympathetic dysfunction) may explain the increase of blood flow.
