    • note
    • If we suppose that the Fermi level at the surface is near the middle of the band gap at zero bias, an applied voltage of -2 V implies that the current comes from states whose energy lies within first ≈1 eV at the top of the valence band. However, the precise value of the energy window over which the current should be integrated is somewhat uncertain, since the exact value of the bias across the tunnelling junction is strongly affected by the screening and long-ranged band bending below the surface. Nonetheless, it should be noted that no strong modifications of the experimental STM contrast have been observed for different negative bias voltages; this suggests that the choice of energy window is not a critical parameter. Our integration region of 0.9 eV was partly a pragmatic one, as this energy range includes all the occupied states which are localized near the surface.
