An interesting experimental study attempting to explain the circumstances under which pneumococci colonizing the upper respiratory tract may invade the lungs and cause pneumonia.

A study demonstrating the avid adherence of Streptococcus pneumoniae to immobilized (but not soluble) fibronectin at cell junctions and the basement membrane of epithelial surfaces. This study may help clarify previous conflicting results regarding the binding of pneumococci to fibronectin and explain the adherence of pneumococci to these sites described in previous in-vitro studies.
