In this study on patients with Wegener's granulomatosis, a 60% reduction in relapses was observed during treatment with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole compared with placebo. The authors suggest that this effect was due to eradication of nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus.

Elevated levels of sVCAM-1 were also found in patients with chronic glomerulonephritis, patients with kidney transplants with stable function, and dialysis patients.
