Loss of Ca in drainage plus storage in the growing biomass and secondary weathering products for "bare" (moss/lichen covered) plots and plots planted with pine trees in the "sandbox" experimental mesocosms at Hubbard Brook, New Hampshire, show a weathering enhancement factor (trees/ bare) of about 10 for Ca.

Small adjacent areas of western Iceland occupied by native birches, introduced evergreen trees (in a nature preserve), and bare, partly moss-covered ground show an enhancement of weathering (by means of the release of Ca and Mg in drainage and storage in biomass) of factors varying from 5 to 10 for trees versus bare ground.
