53. If a nucleus in a differentiated mesenchymal cell is recruited into the blastema, it may undergo 5 to 10 generations before differentiating in the regenerate. Healthy adult newts can undergo at least 20 cycles of regeneration without significant change in timing which suggests a considerable, possibly indefinite proliferative potential within the epimorphic field.
