11. Dietl C, Benoit C: Radial artery graft for coronary revascularisation: technical considerations. Ann Thorac Surg 1995, 60:102-110. In this excellent single-institution series of 165 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery with radial artery graft, the indications and operative protocol are clearly defined. The early results compared very favourably with a contemporary group of controls both from the investigators' own institution and with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) database. The authors recommend an intra-operative Allen test.

Ann Thorac Surg 1996, 62:1076-1083. Despite some heterogeneity within the group in this single Italian Institution Series, the results are encouraging, with satisfactory perioperative and early patency data. Of concern was the finding at 12 months that only 64% of grafts were completely normal. The use of magnetic resonance imaging to assess graft patency and an in-vivo study of graft vasoreactivity to serotonin are worthy of review.

Ann Thorac Surg 1995, 60:517-524. Large series of composite radial artery-left internal mammary artery grafts, with an excellent discussion on why this should be the preferred technique. The patency data are very encouraging. The hypoperfusion syndrome is discussed, and the authors stress early recognition and treatment.
23. DaCosta F, DaCosta I, Poffo R, Abuchaim D, Gaspar R, Garcia L, Faraco D: Myocardial revascularisation with the radial artery: a clinical and angiographic study. Ann Thorac Surg 1996, 62:475-480. Early results from a single institution showed that patients had an encouraging 73% angiography rate before discharge and a small 12-month angiographic series. The early results showed excellent patency: however, various abnormalities were noted in 10% of the patent grafts.

Good results from initial experience with the radial artery graft, with indications and techniques used, particularly in preoperative hand assessment. The authors encourage routine bilateral radial artery use to supplement the left internal mammary artery for complete arterial revascularization.

Edited by Angelini G, Bryan A, Dion R. London: Arnold; 1996:141-146. This book provides a state-of-the-art review of arterial conduits in coronary surgery. It is well planned and easy to read, and it gives a complete clinical and scientific assessment of the currently used arterial conduits. This is an important landmark in the evolution of complete arterial revascularization.

In this published abstract, the authors document very satisfactory results using the radial artery, with a significantly shorter hospital stay for these patients.

31. Chen A, Tatsuya N, Brodman R, Greenberg M, Charney R, Menegus M, et al.: Early postoperative angiographic assessment of radial artery grafts used for coronary artery bypass grafting. J Thorac Cardiovasc Surg 1996, 111:1208-1212. The authors focus primarily on early angiographic findings in 60 patients. Although early patency was excellent (90/94 patients), graft-dependent flow was found in only 80% of patients. Detailed anatomical data on the degree of stenosis of the native vessels is lacking.
32. Carrel T, Kajawski T, Zund G, Schwitter J, Amann F, Gallino A, Bertel O, Jenni R, Turina M: The internal mammary artery malperfusion syndrome: incidence, treatment and angiographic verification. Eur J Cardiothorac Surg 1995, 9:190-197. This is a timely assessment of the hypoperfusion syndrome in relation to the internal mammary artery. Mechanisms and treatment protocols are discussed. This syndrome has enormous implications for the success of the radial artery graft.
