Comparison of transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography with surgical findings in mitral regurgitation
-
Hellemans IM, Pieper EG, Ravelli ACJ, Hamer JPM, Jaarsma W, van den Brink RBA, Peels CH, van Swieten HA, Tijssen JGP, Visser CA: Comparison of transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography with surgical findings in mitral regurgitation. Am J Cardiol 1996, 77:728-733. In a large surgical series of patients with MR, both TEE and TTE performed well, with TTE having a higher degree of accuracy in subjects with normal leaflet mobility. However, TEE was more sensitive in diagnosing chordae tendinae rupture. TTE was sufficient for preoperative evaluation in this setting.

Accuracy of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography for estimating the severity of functional mitral regurgitation
-
Bach DS, Deeb GM, Bolling SF: Accuracy of intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography for estimating the severity of functional mitral regurgitation. Am J Cardiol 1995, 76:508-512. This study defines the effects of general anesthetics on patients with MV disease. Comparing the impact of general anesthesia to conscious sedation, the results show no effect on patients with leaflet abnormalities. In those with functional MR, general anesthetic agents can have a significant influence on jet size (decrease).

Heidenreich PA, Stainback RF, Redberg RF, Schiller NB, Cohen NH, Foster E: Transesophageal echocardiography predicts mortality in critically ill patients with unexplained hypotension. J Am Coll Cardiol 1995, 26:152-158. One of a number of recent studies focusing on the importance of TEE in evaluation of unexplained hypotension in the ICU.
