Anticipation in unipolar affective disorder
-
Engstrom C, Thornlund A, Johansson E, Langstrom M, Chotai J, Adolfsson R, Nylander P: Anticipation in unipolar affective disorder. J Affect Disord 1995, 35:31-40. The finding of an earlier age of onset in the offspring of parents with unipolar illness suggests the phenomenon of anticipation. In Huntingdon's disease, myotonic dystrophy and a handful of other conditions, this is attributed to a trinucleotide repeat expansion mechanism. This group suggests a similar mechanism may be operating in unipolar illness which, if true, would greatly aid the search for determinant or risk genes.

Assessing the statistical power to detect linkage in a sample of 51 bipolar affective disorder pedigrees
-
Lim L, Craddock N, Owen M, Sham P, Nothen M, Komer J, Rietschel M, Fimmer R, Propping P, McGuffin P et al.: Assessing the statistical power to detect linkage in a sample of 51 bipolar affective disorder pedigrees. Behav Genet 1996, 26:113 122. A number of the studies reviewed are based on the same 51 families used in this study. The authors show that such studies have little power, particularly if affective disorders are heterogeneous at the genetic level.
