Bone Marrow Transplant 1996, 17:179-183. This study shows that sequential IL-3 and GM-CSF for mobilization leads to delayed neutrophil recovery. Even though the number of patients is small, this observation illustrates how the mobilization strategy can influence the quality and, therefore, the engraftment potential of the mobilized product.

Blood 1996, 87:5370-5378. Important study that underscores the necessity of combining frequency and quality analysis to compare progenitors in mobilized peripheral blood and marrow. Based on CAFC-and colony-forming unit assays, the authors concluded that the total progenitor cell potency in leukapheresis harvests is threefold higher than in bone marrow.

    • Pan L, Delmonte J Jr, Jalonen CK, Ferrara JLM: Pretreatment of donor mice with granulocyte colony-stimulating factor polarizes donor T lymphocytes toward type-2 Cytokine production and reduces severity of experimental graft versus host disease. Blood 1995, 86(12):4422-4429. The authors show in a murine transplantation model that the T-helper phenotype of the donor after treatment with G-CSF is polarized toward a type II cytokine response. This demonstrates the potential of functional alterations in accessory cell function after cytokine treatment, which may be relevant for graft-versus-host disease and engraftment.
