A substantial number of unusually young individuals have succumbed to CJD in Britain and show a characteristic histopathological feature, so-called florid amyloid plaques. Circumstantial evidence points to a link between this new form of CJD and BSE.

    • Cousens SN, Vynnycky E, Zeidler M, Will RG, Smith PG: Predicting the CJD epidemic in humans. Nature 1997, 385:197-198. The good news is that after a spate of variant CJD cases last year, there have only been a few additional cases this year; the bad news is that it is still too early to tell whether or not we face an epidemic in the future.
