Validity and neuropsychological characterization of Asperger syndrome: Convergence with nonverbal learning disabilities syndrome

Klin A, Volkmar FR, Sparrow SS, Cicchetti DV, Rourke BP: Validity and neuropsychological characterization of Asperger syndrome: convergence with nonverbal learning disabilities syndrome. J Child Psychol Psychiatry 1995, 36:1127-1140. This paper extends associations between right hemisphere learning problems and AS and is the first to link nonverbal learning disorders with AS. It is important for finding measurable differences between HFA and children with AS, but the inclusion criterion of clumsiness for the AS is important to bear in mind.

Increased frequency of the extended or ancestral haplotype B44-SC30-DR4 in autism
-
Daniels WW, Warren RP, Odell JD, Maciulis A, Burger RA, Warren WL, Torres AR: Increased frequency of the extended or ancestral haplotype B44-SC30-DR4 in autism. Neuropsychobiology, 1995, 32:120-123. Although the methods for diagnosis were weak, this study is an important step in furthering data on the theory of a genetic susceptibility that is precipitated by a postinfectious event. B44-SC30-DR4 on chromosome 6 is believed to influence major histocompatibility complex, particularly the C4B gene that codes for components of complement.

Autism and genetics: Clinical approach and association with two markers of HRAS gene
-
Herault J, Petit E, Marineua J, Perrot A, Lenoir P, Cherpi C, Barthelemy C, Sauvage D, Mallet J, Muh JP, Lelord G: Autism and genetics: clinical approach and association with two markers of HRAS gene. Am J Med Genet 1995, 60:276-281. The c-Harvey-ras (HRAS) oncogene marker on chromosome 11 is interesting because it may be linked to dopamine receptor genes, and HRAS itself appears to produce a factor that influences nerve growth and differentiation. Distribution of specific HRAS alleles was statistically greater in autistic subjects compared with normal controls, but all alleles surfaced in both groups and did not correlate with clinical status.

Male to male transmission in extended pedigrees with multiple cases of autism
-
Hallmayer J, Spiker D, Lotspeich L, McMahon WM, Petersen PB, Nicholas P, Pingree C, Ciaranello RD: Male to male transmission in extended pedigrees with multiple cases of autism. Am J Med Genet 1996 67:13-18. This important study followed a molecular genetic study that strongly suggested a smaller role for fragile X in the etiology of autism. The current study went on to confirm the previous findings using a different method in order to capture milder forms of the disorder in multiplex pedigrees. The results confirmed that X linkage could not explain a majority of the cases, and fragile X defects were not present in the families in whom X linkage was suspected.

Autism: Towards an integration of clinical genetic, neuropsychological, and neurobiological perspectives
-
Bailey A, Phillips W, Rutter M: Autism: towards an integration of clinical genetic, neuropsychological, and neurobiological perspectives. J Child Psychol Psychiatry 1996, 37:89-126. This lengthy review offers a thorough review of autism research findings in these fields. Detailed discussions of the limitations in methods and recommendations for future investigations are provided. Unusual effort was made to integrate findings across fields in relationship to theory; this one is exceptionally thoughtful.

Executive functions and developmental psychopathology
-
Pennington BF, Ozonoff S: Executive functions and developmental psychopathology. J Child Psychol Psychiatry 1996, 37:51-87. This is a detailed and scholarly overview of executive function and executive dysfunction in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Tourette's syndrome, conduct disorder, and autism. It advances the idea that executive function deficits may predispose to theory of mind deficits and explain other symptoms of autism. It also emphasizes that these deficits are not specific to autism.

Can children with autism be taught to understand false belief using computers?
-
Swettenham J: Can children with autism be taught to understand false belief using computers? J Child Psychol Psychiatry 1996, 37:157-165. This is a thoughtful, succinct study with provocative results. It makes an important contribution to our knowledge of how ordinary and retarded children (as well as in those with autistic spectrum disorders) acquire false belief skills. Whether children with autism spectrum disorders have difficulties generalizing any experience or only theory of mind remains an open question. It is still uncertain whether learning theory of mind skills advances social competence.

An exploration of right hemisphere contributions of the pragmatic impairments of autism
-
Ozonoff S, Miller JN: An exploration of right hemisphere contributions of the pragmatic impairments of autism. Brain Lang 1996, 52:411-434. At one level this is a replication study, but it goes farther in its comparison of right hemisphere-damaged adults and autistic persons. This well-designed study explores the role of right hemisphere functions in pragmatic language disorder and suggests that parts of executive function may reside in the right hemisphere instead of the frontal lobes, as has been proposed.

Proximity and sociable behaviors in autism: Evidence for attachment
-
Dissanayke C, Crossley SA: Proximity and sociable behaviors in autism: evidence for attachment. J Child Psychol Psychiatry 1996, 37:149-156. This methodologically tight study makes a strong claim for distinguishing between reciprocity and attachment in autistic individuals. The clinical relevance is that autistic youngsters display attachment; this finding should not lead clinicians to exclude autism on the presence of these behaviors.

Haloperidol-related dyskinesias and pre- and perinatal complications in autistic children
-
Armenteros JL, Adams PB, Campbell M, Eisenberg ZW: Haloperidol-related dyskinesias and pre- and perinatal complications in autistic children. Psychopharmacol Bull 1995, 31:363-369. This is a useful analysis of a large number of children followed up by an experienced group of investigators. Tardive or withdrawal dyskinesia occurred in children with and without perinatal complications, but the risk was significantly greater in those with perinatal complications. The implication is that perinatal and delivery histories, including the type of anesthesia used, may influence the preference of pharmacologic agents, closeness of monitoring, doses used, and duration of treatment in order to avoid development of tardive or withdrawal dyskinesia.
