Neutralization of TGF-beta by anti-TGF-beta antibody attenuates kidney hypertrophy and the enhanced extracellular matrix gene expression in STZ-induced diabetic mice

Diabetes 1996, 45:522-530. This study demonstrates that TGF-B has a causal role in the extracellular matrix accumulation and renal hypertrophy seen in early diabetic nephropathy.

Lab Invest 1996, 74:991-1003. Using transgenic mice overexpressing the TGF-ß1 gene in the liver, this study showed that increased plasma levels of TGF-ß1 result in progressive renal fibrosis and death from renal failure.

Dual effects of angiotensin II on the plasminogen/plasmin system in rat mesangial cells
-
Kagami S, Kuhura T, Okuda K, Border WA, Noble NA: Dual effects of angiotensin II on the plasminogen/plasmin system in rat mesangial cells. Kidney Int 1997, 51:664-671. PAI-1 is an important inhibitor of the matrix degrading plasminogen/plasmin system. This paper presents in-vitro data demonstrating that Ang II has an early direct effect on PAI-1 expression and that sustained PAI-1 upregulation is mediated through induction of TGF-ß synthesis.
