This would suggest that even though bone mass is somewhat reversible with treatment, either the reversal is not complete or there are microarchitectural changes that revert after attainment of euthyroidism.

J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1996, 81:1905-1911. This is a fascinating case report of Cushing's disease in a 15-year-old whose twin was normal. Bone density was low at the time of diagnosis and improved with cure of the disease, but after 2 years, bone mass still did not normalize. This finding suggests that treatment can reverse some bone loss but may permanently impair acquisition of peak bone mass.
