Dll1, a mouse homologue of the Drosophila neurogenic gene Delta that is expressed in the presomitic mesoderm and posterior halves of somites, is required for A - P somite polarity and the maintenance of segment borders. Mutations affecting somite formation and patterning in the zebrafish, Danio rerio. of special interest Development. 123:1996;153-164 Mutants with defects in somite segmentation and patterning have been isolated from a large-scale screen for zygotic mutations affecting zebrafish development. Transplantation of wild-type cells into two mutants demonstrate a requirement for gene function in paraxial mesoderm. These experiments, together with comparisons between somite and notochord mutants, suggest the ordering of some of these genes in a signalling pathway from the notochord to the somites.
