J Infect Dis 1996, 173:1129-1136. In this study, changes were described in the bowel flora of 22 healthy volunteers in Belgium, who were administered oral glycopeptides (teicoplanin or vancomycin) over 3 weeks in 1989. None had VRE recovered from their stool before exposure to the oral glycopeptide, whereas VRE was recovered from 64% of the volunteers by the end of the study.
